College costs on election agenda
Article Abstract:
The rising cost of higher education in the United States is becoming a key issue for the candidates looking to garner the support of middle-class voters in the 2004 presidential elections, an issue that is causing concern amongst university officials. So far universities have succeed in restraining President George W. Bush from attacking the growing cost of tuition, which it was expected he would do, but presidential aides are believed to be floating the idea that the level of tuition fee an institution can charge should be linked to either its graduation rates or its success in attracting science and engineering students. Tuition fees at private universities in the US rose by 6% in 2003, while tuition fees at public universities rose by 14%, bringing the total annual cost, including room and board, to US$26,854 and US$10,636 respectively.

Top colleges get choosier to beat deluge
Article Abstract:
Top US universities have seen a surge in applications as the most gifted students increase the number of institutions they approach. However, the trend to send multiple applications may have backfired as some of the most selective universities are accepting fewer applications to combat the increase in volume.
