Competition undermines creativity
Article Abstract:
The White paper on science and technology calls for all research projects to be evaluated, a move which could undermine the long term benefits of such research, according to John Ziman. Competition in research may mean that no encouragement is given to innovative projects resulting in creativity being stifled, because the long term financial return is considered too risky. Mr Ziman believes that research should welcome innovation, allow time for concepts to mature, encourage open criticism and debate and pay respect to specialised fields.

The industrial evolution: can Darwinism be applied to technological innovation?
Article Abstract:
An analogy between biological and cultural evolution has often been made. This can be developed to consider how material artefacts undergo variation through mutation and recombination of characteristic traits. Technology provides many instances that are similar to well-known biological phenomena such as evolutionary drift, niche competition, diversification and extinctions.

Subversive scholar; how Thomas Kuhn shattered scientific beliefs 30 years ago
Article Abstract:
Thomas Kuhn proposed revolutionary ideas in his book, 'The Structure of Scientific Revolutions.' Using a paradigm he showed that scientific discovery is linked to the scientific community not just the individual. Discoveries had to be viewed in the context of the time when they were made, not related to later knowledge.
