Confusion and medical ethics
Article Abstract:
There are difficult ethical issues associated with asking patients with Alzheimer's disease to become involved in scientific research. In particular, problems arise with the use of genetic information. The Nuffield Council on Bioethics has concluded that, since it is not possible for anyone to give consent for involvement in medical research on behalf of another adult, then in law non-therapeutic research is not permitted. The Council has recommended that those who are only mentally competent for part of the time should only be requested to give their consent to involvement in research when they are fully competent.

Matters of life and death; ethical dilemmas ahead for medical researchers
Article Abstract:
The main priorities for medical researchers are seen as slowing down population, infections, geriatric studies, environmental factors and non-adaptation to social change. Diseases such as AIDS and drug-resistant malaria need to be conquered. World population growth must be reduced, the technology is available but social and political factors come into play. As physical health improves more attention will be paid to mental health.
