Article Abstract:
Medical and technological advances can prompt a re-thinking of the theories and categories of bioethics, the exploration of the ethical, social and legal issues raised by advances in medicine and the life sciences, particularly in the area of genetics. The mapping of the breast cancer disposition gene BRCA1 has raised a number of issues relating to genetic screening, such as the circumstances in which predictive testing should be offered and the implications of a positive predictive result for both individuals and their genetic relatives.
