Course obstacles
Article Abstract:
Sophie Corlett, assistant director of the National Bureau for Students with Disabilities, Skill, notes that most institutions and universities go out of their way to help students with disabilities despite having no statutory duty even to accept them. Helen Garrod, who is largely confined to a wheelchair because of her dwarfism, was welcomed by Nottingham University but would have liked the university to think ahead rather than make adaptations once a disabled student had arrived. Nick Clark, who is partially sighted feels that his disability led him to miss out on opportunities at Cambridge where he went to read mathematics in 1977.

Even of Keele
Article Abstract:
Liberal Democrat MP Don Foster believes that his time at Keele University in the 1960s was a formative time, although not necessarily in an academic or intellectual sense. Looking back, Foster sees his university life as a busy time which was formative more in the sense of becoming involved in a wide range of activities and in forming close friendships. Foster was very active in student politics but was not at all party political. He was also very involved in organising charity events and student entertainment. Foster is now the Liberal Democrat spokesman on education and employment.

Marriage and the job
Article Abstract:
The recruitment of husband-and-wife academics Ulrich and Elizabeth Beck by the University College Cardiff illustrates the difficulty of recruiting highly talented professionals and the problems faced by academic couples to maintain their relationships. Faculties that need to attract internationally-renowned academics must offer attractive packages, which can include finding employment for spouses. The growing trend for institutions to attract star names has its roots in the US, where joint packages are becoming more common.
