Curriculum wars
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour Party's immediate response to the Government's announcement in Oct. 1996, that it had asked the Teacher Training Agency to prepare a national curriculum for initial teacher training was to counter-attack, but Labour is likely to introduce a core curriculum if it is elected. Labour education spokesman David Blunkett suggested in May 1996 that an 'urgent rethink' of initial teacher education was needed. Blunkett also said that Labour would consider re-introducing induction. Qualified Teacher Status would only be awarded following the satisfactory completion of the first year of teaching.

Teachers lead a revolution in outward mobility after the isolation years
Article Abstract:
Teachers in the United Kingdom have applied in large numbers for the 1996 Toshiba scholarships, indicating a great need for information regarding computer mobility and online connections. Many areas will be covered such as teaching and learning, in the form of workshops, online tutorials and online conferencing. Applications are from institutions, rather than from individuals, as was the case in 1995. Electronic interfaces are particularly useful for teachers who have to communicate with other teachers at another educational location.

Modules to modernity
Article Abstract:
The UK teacher training system should be radically altered to improve the quality and consistency of education within the teaching profession, says Michael Barber of the University of London Institute of Education. Newly-qualified UK teachers are currently automatically accepted into the profession even though they may not be suited to teaching. A three-year entry program or apprenticeship system is put forward as an alternative scheme for consideration.
