Debt leads to sharp rise in cries for help
Article Abstract:
University counsellors have warned that the human cost of the UK government's higher education policies is manifesting itself through a rise in student depression rates. According to a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) survey, the number of students looking for help from therapists is increasing faster than ever, but financially stretched counselling services are finding it difficult to meet demand. Much of the blame for the rising depression rates amongst students is laid by counsellors at the door of the government and its policies, which are increasing pressure on students by increasing debt levels. The BACP study revealed that "vulnerable" students were having to wait an average of three weeks to see a counsellor.

Rescue for top-rated staff only
Article Abstract:
A promise by the Government to protect nationally important but vulnerable academic subjects, such as the physical sciences and modern languages, may only cover the top research-intensive university departments. The discovery has caused alarm amongst some academics who fear that the policy could result in areas of the country where students living at home will not be able to take certain subjects as no university near them offers it.

10-year plan poses threat to autonomy
Article Abstract:
Universities will be required to provide the Government with one year's notice before shutting down struggling departments under chancellor Gordon Brown and the Treasury's new 10-year investment plan for science. The plan signals a more interventionist role for higher education funding chiefs and has prompted charges that the Government is encroaching on university autonomy.
