Article Abstract:
Ahead of the unveiling of the UKPd106 million Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff in November 2004, how architecture can encapsulate a country's identity is examined. The Wales Millennium Centre is praised for using traditional Welsh material, such as slate, stone steel and timber, is its design. How Canadians and Finns have come up with their own distinctive architectural identities is also examined.

Issues concerning the attitude of society towards old age and the relationship between age and academic ability are examined. It is argued that age holds no bar to valuable scholarship and that in certain subjects, such as philosophy and history, mature reflections counts for at least as much as evidence gathering.
