Article Abstract:
An overview of the higher education sector in China and the efforts being made by British institutions to enter the market. The total enrolment at public universities and colleges in China increased to 12.14 million in 2001, vs 6.43 million in 1998, and it is estimated that at present there are still about 1.3 million qualified school-leavers/yr being refused university places in China as a result of lack of capacity. It is this that the British universities are hoping to exploit.

An analysis of the work being done by the Open Book Project operated by Goldsmiths College, London, and the work done by Manchester University's University Options project. The Open Book Project aims to break down the traditional barriers that discourage some people from considering entering higher education while the University Options project aims to help prospective students make an informed decision about the options open to them.
