Electronic publication threatens journals
Article Abstract:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States is planning to develop a electronic publishing site on the Internet, for scientific works. The site would be known as E-biomed. The site would contain biomedical research reports and could be accessed at no cost. The reports would be vetted by a board who would maintain the quality of the site. There is some concern the NIH would have to much control over the site to the disadvantage of foreign scientists. Representatives of NIH point out the introduction of E-biomed will save money and increase the dissemination of knowledge.

Painting a rosy picture
Article Abstract:
A survey has revealed that over 90% of students who graduated from the Royal College of Art (RCA) between 1992 and 1996 obtained employment in areas directly related to their field of study. The survey covered all 23 courses offered by the RCA, the only postgraduate college of art and design in the world with university status. All 33 computer-related design graduates secured jobs in their field, as did 69 of the 72 graduates from the goldsmithing, silversmithing, metalwork and jewellery course. The survey highlights the RCA's value at a time when it fears its funding might be cut.

Aping Darwin
Article Abstract:
University College London, England, Professor of Genetics Steve Jones has rewritten the book 'On the Origin of Species' by Scientist Charles Darwin for a modern audience. Jones took 147,000 words to write his book almost the same number of words as originally taken by Darwin. Jones admits he found defining the nature of species very difficult because it still remains unknown. Jones has called his book 'Almost Like a Whale' but found it problematic to decide on an alternative title for his American publisher, who disliked the orignal title. Darwin's book was published in 1859.
