Urban education: the impasse in the schools
Article Abstract:
The problems of public schools in big cities are taken up in three recent books that narrate teachers' experiences. Aside from inadequate funding, teacher employment difficulties, student problems, lack of school space and bureaucracy are discussed. Suggestions to improve the educational system are given.

American epic: then and now
Article Abstract:
An analysis of books on US topics using the word 'epic' has led to the question of whether the existing conditions qualify the US as epic. With the country not being threatened by tyranny, the new objective seems to be the achievement of peaceful coexistence and better educational opportunities.

Public school education continues to thrive in mediocrity as national leaders continually ignore education reform initiatives. An effective principal, qualified teachers, a satisfactory curriculum, participation by parents and adequate financial support are still badly needed.
