Engulfed in a tyrant's wake
Article Abstract:
Higher education in Iraq operates under conditions of extreme deprivation as a result of sanctions imposed on the country after the Gulf War. The United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions in 1990 which froze trade and overseas assets. Students in Iraq have had access to virtually no new textbooks since that date, there are no modern computers, modems are banned and the United Nations will not allow the import of pencils. Rampant inflation has also reduced lecturers' salaries to the British equivalent of 0.5 pounds sterling per month.

Kabul campus countdown
Article Abstract:
Kabul University in Afghanistan is set to reopen in Apr. 1996 after having been closed in Apr. 1992 due to fighting during the Russian occupation and the later civil war. The 16-year war left little of the university still standing, but buildings have now been repaired and the campus has been de-mined. The students are determined but face formidable challenges: no electricity, books or money, and the continuing threat of rocket attacks and fighting between the government and the Taliban, an Islamic fundamentalist group.
