Equality, but not for poor
Article Abstract:
The French higher education system allows unequal access to the members of the community and seems to favour wealthy students. A 1993 study found evidence of persistent inequality in education, with the upper classes 65% more likely to gain a higher diploma than those from the lower classes. A second study found poorer students often were obliged to work to support themselves whilst they are at university. Grants for students allow families who earn less than FFr40,000 annually, to receive support valued at FFr13,000, whilst those earning over FFr800,000 receive FFr47,000.
