Students in the UK are turning their back on diploma courses and are steering clear of some new universities, according to figures compiled by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas). The figures also reveal that civic universities used the government's removal of the cap on the maximum amount of student's each university can recruit to fill thousands of additional places in autumn 2002, leaving the new universities to sink or swim. The universities of Liverpool and Leeds both boosted their intake by 19% in autumn 2002, the University of Nottingham increased intake by 15% and the University of Birmingham by 11%, however, the University of North London saw its intake through the Ucas system fall by 29%.

9,000 places 'lost in post'

The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas) in the United Kingdom has admitted that it has sent letters to 9,000 students mistakenly telling them that they will have no university place come autumn 2003 unless they apply through Ucas Extra or go through clearing once they get their A-level results. The error occurred because Ucas assumed that the students had not returned the necessary university application forms before the deadline of 15 May 2003, however, many of the applications had simply been delivered to the wrong address.

Merger spawns massive hybrid
Article Abstract:
Thames Valley University and Reading College are to merge in a move that will result in the creation of the most advanced hybrid further and higher education institution in the United Kingdom. The merged institution, which calls itself a "vocational" university, will have 45,000 students, of which around 30% will be in further education and the remainder in higher education.
