Fear silenced grant protests
Article Abstract:
A climate of fear has prevented top-rated medical researchers in the UK from speaking out about the manner in which the Medical Research Council (MRC) manages its grants process, with a number of leading researchers believing that they could not complain about the situation in case they were blackballed for future grants. The researchers were furious that the council had not informed either them or the expert review panels that examined their grant applications that did not have the budget for any new grants. Eventually, 20 scientists who had seen their large, top-rated bids get turned down complained to the House of Commons science and technology committee, which has just published a damning report into the operations of the MRC.

Great accusations
Article Abstract:
A pediatrician conducting authorized research into sudden infant death syndrome (Sids) and other unexpected deaths in childhood is being accused of managing research likely to lead to brain damage in infants. These incorrect and misleading allegations leveled by an MP in the House of Commons would endanger the participation of pediatricians in such research.
