Fears over new costing regime
Article Abstract:
There are fears that the Government's new model for the costing of university research, which is designed to help universities recoup the real cost of their research work, could actually damage the research that it is meant to protect by tying the researchers up in red tape. David Wallace, vice-president of the Royal Society, argues that the new measures have been driven by accountants and consultants who have no real idea what research is about while Universities UK welcomes the new system but notes that it should not represent and additional regulatory burden.

Business cash skews science
Article Abstract:
The academic integrity of research in the United Kingdom is at risk as the government attempts to encourage researchers to look for commercial income rather than relying on state support, the Royal Society has claimed. The society fears that the increasing moves towards university-industry collaboration on research could potentially lead to scientific results becoming biased, with Patrick Bateson, vice-president of the society, claiming that the choice of research topics was already being affected by commercial opportunities.

New projects may lose out on cash
Article Abstract:
An analysis of Chancellor Gordon Brown's 10-year investment framework for science. While Brown's plans pledge that funding for research and development in the UK will rise to 2.5% of gross domestic product by 2014 vs 1.9% at present, research leaders have warned that there will be very little funding made available for new research projects.
