Focus on Hardship, not fees
Article Abstract:
Many members of the Scottish parliament remain opposed to the introduction of student fees for undergraduates. Yet abolishing all undergraduates' fees may not help the poorer students as many do not pay the fees, it would only give money to the more affluent families. Some observers suggest other initiatives could be introduced, such as, special payments for poorer students or extra loans. To remove the need to pay fees from Scottish and European Union students in higher and further education is likely to cost around 250 million pounds sterling per annum.

Big advances need big battalions
Article Abstract:
The provision of further education in Scotland is very important, with some 40% of all Scots who enter higher education, do so through further education colleges. Further education colleges in Scotland receive funds of 290 million pounds sterling from the state. Non-degree courses have been discovered to be cheaper to run and give more opportunities for those studying in post-compulsory education. Scottish further education facilities have yet to be allocated extra funding from the UK Labour Government.
