Forgotten army's time has come
Article Abstract:
There were around 41,200 support staff in UK universities and colleges. Many are paid at the lowest rate of between 3.77-4.07 pounds sterling per hour. The higher education review committee should take the time to examine the wages and conditions of ancillary staff, who have previously been treated very poorly. Differences in conditions between new and old universities must be eradicated. A single pension fund should cover all staff. Training courses should be readily available for all support staff to enable them to give the best service.

How to reward prize pedagogues
Article Abstract:
Good university teachers often fail to receive the same amount of public recognition and be promoted as often as outstanding researchers or managers. Some educational institutions have introduced teacher fellowships which recognize the importance of high quality teaching. Most interview boards face the problem of making a decision on what constitutes a good teacher. They need to define the attributes of a good teacher and ensure candidates for promotion have demonstrated these qualities within their portfolio.

Pay may depend on profit
Article Abstract:
UK universities are considering profit-related pay as a way of preserving employment and providing pay rises that are higher than inflation. The government allows for up to 20% of pay to be tax-exempt through profit-related pay schemes. Some 12 schemes could be operational among UK universities by Jul 1996, and up to 40 schemes in 1997. There are legal problem to be tackled before the schemes can be set up, such as proving that universities are run to make a profit.
