Islam expert Annemarie Schimmel will receive a peace prize at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1995. Schimmel has been attacked for an appearance on TV where she asked for understanding of Islamic protests against Salman Rushdie's work 'Satanic Verses,' which outraged many Muslims. She has been awarded the prize for her work promoting understanding between Christians and Muslims. She links fundamentalism to unemployment and other social problems.

Happy ending for Cinderella college
Article Abstract:
The Roehampton Institute in London was not awarded university status in 1992, unlike many similar institutions. The college did earn high scores due to its research and has been awarded more funding. They have also won a commercial contract to develop educational computer software. Other colleges have benefitted from their research rankings also and attracted more government funding.

Exchange thrives but UK gets more insular
Article Abstract:
The number of British students participating in the Socrates Erasmus student exchange scheme fell to just over 10,000 in 1999 to 2000, from almost 12,000 in 1994 to 1995. It is likely that there will be only 9,000 participants in 2001 to 2002. France, Germany and Spain send the most students abroad on the scheme.
