When US students received laptop computers to help in note-taking, many ended up surfing the internet in lectures. Erik Brynjolfsson, professor of management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was originally enthusiastic about laptops in lectures but now has a 'closed-laptop' policy after attending a lecture by Jay Walker, business guru, where he saw students surfing the internet.

The way in which American war veterans are using the entitlement earned by their time in the military to benefit from education, where many of them putting it toward higher education is presented. However, the veterans often find it difficult to adjust to studying, thus several states and institutions are offering various support mechanisms to help them cope.

An analysis of the efforts by Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, to use the iPod as an educational tool. Since the start of the 2004-2005 academic year, students have had access to a dedicated website that offers downloads of audio files such as lectures or readings of novellas for their iPods.
