Front man for the rock band
Article Abstract:
Iain Stewart, senior lecturer in geology at Plymouth University, has transferred his expertise in geology into a burgeoning career as a TV presenter, with one series about the geology behind the art, food and culture of the Mediterranean region under his belt and another in production. Stewart notes that he is an unofficial champion for his subject, aiming to increase the number of students taking up the subject by demonstrating that it is about more than just rocks, but argues that the research assessment exercise does not help his cause by focusing solely of traditional research work and not recognising work doe in other areas.

Professor Peter Lipton, head of the department of history and philosophy of science at Cambridge University, is involved in the project and notes that philosophers are dealing with a number of issues that are of interest to the public in general and it is important for philosophers to have a forum for getting their views across.

Article Abstract:
An overview of the reasons why a number of academics have turned down advances from publishers to write books on their specialist subject targeted at the general rather than the academic market. The general reason put forward by scholars is that, in producing a work for the general market, they would probably be compelled to simplify issues and this would be doing everybody a disservice.
