GM's bitter harvest
Article Abstract:
The senior lecturer in plant science at Cambridge University argues that plant science in the United Kingdom is under threat, with researchers in the field of genetically modified (GM) crops being driven overseas as a result of the oversimplification of the debate into their pros and cons. It is suggested that plant science in the UK is now in a risky and untenable situation as a result of the country's prevailing anti-GM atmosphere, and that this could have knock-on effects for the state of UK agriculture as a whole.

The face of things to come
Article Abstract:
The announcement in 2003 that surgeons in the UK and US were ready to perform the first whole-face transplant led to the Royal College of Surgeons of England to establish an expert group to consider evidence and expert opinion related to risks of surgical failure or rejection of the transplant, psychological consequences, the ramifications of lifetime immunosuppression and ethical issues. It was concluded that, in view of the risks, proceeding with human facial transplantation would be 'unwise'.
