Article Abstract:
An analysis of the sense of isolation and hostility from colleagues that many young academics feel and advice on how to combat this. New academics should attempt to meet other new people at their university through training or induction courses or by volunteering to do administrative tasks that will give an idea of how the institution is run. Also, new academics should see if mentoring schemes are in operation, as well as proper appraisal systems.
