Glimmer of hope
Article Abstract:
University College London, England Professor David Latchman has been researching the use of gene therapy to treat neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease. There is some hope of also using gene therapy for diseases, such as Alzheimer's. Parkinson's disease occurs when some of the nerve cells in the brain, which produce dopamine, die. Despite treating patients with drugs containing dopamine the disease eventually worsens. Latchman has chosen the herpes simplex virus to take the genes into the dying cells. He has had some success with implanting foetal cells.

Why poles are all at sea
Article Abstract:
Art Jonkers, historian, and Andy Jackson and Dave Gubbins, earth scientists, are interested in the magnetic field of the earth. Geologists can assess the position of the magnetic field, which can vary considerably, as can the strength of the field. Data from 18th century seafarers has been used to study the field, as well as rocks, which record the position of the field. The magnetic field has been reduced by 40% since the time of the Romans, and a reversal could occur in a thousand years' time.
