Grants lobby refuses to die

Article Abstract:

Some 86% of the 400 UK academics, who took part in the 1999 Times Higher Education Supplement survey, felt students' work was being affected by their lack of financial support. Over 50% of the participants supported the planned expansion of higher education. Whilst nearly 50% of academics were concerned money from business would limit academic independence. Some 96% of academics called for the retention of maintenance grants for less well-off students. The Department for Education and Employment claimed extra loans were available for poorer students.

Task force sees merit in drive to tap alumni

Article Abstract:

A report from the UK government's endowments task force has concluded that universities in the UK could generate an additional UKPd600 mil/yr from fundraising, but the report acknowledges that the universities will face an uphill struggle to prise donations out of tight-fisted former students. The report compares the cultures of academic donations in the UK and the US.

UUK slams 'mean'funding

Article Abstract:

At the September 2001 annual residential meeting for British university leaders in Southampton, vice chancellors are set to demand more student funding. The call for additional funding is the result of increased student hardship, and unequal funding opportunities for students.
