Article Abstract:
Roehampton University will start rolling out a major experiment in September 2006, initially with 400 to 500 first-year students from a range of subject areas, whereby students will do a module in citizenship and social justice. The project is run by the Crucible, a GBP4.5 million Centre of Excellence in Human Rights and Social Justice which was set up by the university with money from the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Chemistry closure 'unviable'
Article Abstract:
Jonathan Bacon, dean of life sciences at Sussex University, the manager who devised the university's plan to close its chemistry department, has admitted that the scheme is 'unworkable' and 'intellectually unviable'. The admission came as the university senate granted the department a reprieve by backing a motion calling for the proposals to be reviewed.

Healthy rise in undergraduate applications
Article Abstract:
Applications to undergraduate courses in U.K. universities rose by 6.7 per cent in 2008, indicating strong growth for the second consecutive year. However, Welsh institutions experienced a 10.7 per cent fall in applications for most subjects.
