Article Abstract:
Cambridge University's female-only New Hall College will celebrate its 50th anniversary in autumn 2004. New Hall has seen its intake grow from 16 in its first year to over 500 undergraduates, postgraduates and fellows today. Anne Lonsdale, president of New Hall, believes that the college, with its single-sex status, provides a valuable opportunity for women from certain religious or cultural groups to gain access to higher education.

Article Abstract:
An analysis of the role of the rich in the 20th century. It is suggested that the fate of the rich was largely in the hands of the taxman during the 20th century with the number of wealthy people falling during the century as the top rates of taxation increased and then rising again from the 1980s onwards as the accumulation of wealth became more socially acceptable.
