Hefce to take no action over London Met errors
Article Abstract:
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce) has revealed that it plans to take action against the London Metropolitan University, despite an investigation which has revealed that the university made a number of errors in its research assessment exercise submissions. Hefce states that the submissions were inaccurate but "immaterial", a stand that Alan O'Day, the academic who raised the alarm regarding the submissions more than two-and-a-half years ago, believes is "farcical".

FoI Act could make external reports public
Article Abstract:
Universities in the UK fear that the external examiner system for maintaining national academic standards could collapse as a result of the Freedom of Information Act. While some argue that opening up this secretive process to legitimate public scrutiny would be beneficial, others argue that the current system, which is based on trust, discretion and goodwill, would collapse if examiners believed that their reports would become public documents.

Concern over bid to cut exams
Article Abstract:
DeMontfort University (DMU) has been criticised after a series of e-mails were leaked which show how the university moved to cut the number of exams in one department. DMU introduced major curriculum reforms in 2004-05 and moved to a three-term year but has faced criticism as Dr Eugene Critchlow, academic registrar, stated that the curriculum reforms were specifically designed to reduce the number of formal exams.
