Helping academics have families and tenure too
Article Abstract:
The Sloan Foundation offered US$250,000 "accelerator grants" in 2006 to several American universities that are creating campuses that make it easier for female academics to balance family responsibilities with their careers. Universities are realizing their own self-interest in designing major changes in a tenure system that has been traditionally unreceptive toward faculty members with families.

The complex student body of LaGuardia Community College explains how the profile of the typical college student is changing. At LaGuardia diversity has inspired innovations that create community and stimulate faculty introspection and to be successful, reform need to be comprehensive, rather than ad hoc and must include student participation.

A crisis of rapidly rising enrollments, without increased support and repeated budget cuts are jeopardizing the unique mission of the United States' nearly twelve hundred community colleges. These colleges have had to refuse thousands of applicants, and student enrollment pressure is showing no sign of reducing.
