American public school system is suffering from an image problem and a decline in funding in the first decade of the 21st century. Public school leaders could learn from the highly competitive world of private institutions and consider some proven techniques for image enhancement and institutional advancement.

A historical account of the way the ideology of state schooling emerged in the myth of the common school (1988) and the myth's development in 19th century France, the Netherlands, and the United States is traced. Many as oppressive rather than liberating experienced Enlightenment in this form.
