Article Abstract:
The number of Asians choosing to study history declined in the three decades from the 1960s. This is a surprising fact, given the Asian respect for the past, but also of note is the re-emergence of the subject in the 1990s. The roots of the Asian respect for the past differ according to the different traditions, but all were influenced, in the 20th century, by the European and American traditions of historical study, and the subject flourished. The respect for historical study dissipated in the post-colonial period of rapid industrial development, but in some parts of Asia there is a new interest in history for its nation-building potential.

Breadth and the powerful
Article Abstract:
Developing countries in Asia are struggling to find the most appropriate model of higher education. The traditional European model of narrowing focus at degree level is not appropriate to the needs of developing nations in the modern world. Companies and nations require graduates with multidisciplinary skills and originality in thinking, who are adaptable enough to deal with any problem. Some Asian countries have copied the more liberal US model of higher education, but this has also not proved entirely appropriate for their requirements.

New interest in old powers
Article Abstract:
Asian colleges and universities are demonstrating their increasing interest in the new style European studies which do not just include history and language but economies and finance. Some Asian universities are reintroducing European studies. In the past Japan had sent its young people to study in Germany and the UK but in later years they went to the US. The inaugural Asia-Europe Meeting in 1996 has also helped to stimulate the Asian interest in Europe.
