'In the States, most affirmative action helps the already advantaged - children of politicians and their friends, children of the rich, of alumni'
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the efficacy of positive discrimination in higher education are examined in the light of the possibility that the white paper on the future of higher education in the United Kingdom could clear the way for the launch of an affirmative-action programme in the UK designed to increase the number of students from working class backgrounds entering university. It is argued that while positive discrimination is theoretically possible and is certainly a discussable idea, in the end it would prove to be politically impossible and too unfair to the well-qualified to be easily stomached.

'The DfES seems to be a transit lounge, where junior ministers on their way up, down and sideways are parked before heading for their next stopover'
Article Abstract:
The Labour Government insists that its priorities are "education, education, education". However, it is argued that it does not take the Department for Education and Employment seriously enough, never giving the ministers appointed to run the department enough time to properly learn their job and then making any sort of meaningful difference.
