In the shadow of Saatchi
Article Abstract:
The students who will graduate from London, England's art colleges in summer 1997 are frantically preparing for the degree shows that have now become artists' first public outing. Degree shows attract dealers and gallery directors and expectations are high. All young artists harbour hopes of achieving the celebrity of Damien Hirst or Sarah Lucas, but only a handful will be able to live by their work. Students often find their tutors extremely supportive and inspirational and many feel somewhat lost once they leave college. However others are not afraid of blatant self-publicity.
