Iraq is no place for Japanese lessons
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the comparison between the successful reconstruction of Japan and its political system by the Americans between 1945 and 1952 and the reconstruction of Iraq are examined. It is argued by John Dower, professor of Japanese history at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and author of "Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II", the work it is claimed on which the US government is basing its assumptions, that there is no parallel between the two situations. Dower points out that the occupation of Japan had a legal and moral legitimacy in the eyes of just about all the world, whereas in Iraq this is not the case, and that a number of the reforms put in place by the US in Japan - such as labour laws guaranteeing the right to organise and bargain collectively - would probably not be countenanced by the current Bush regime.

More support makes the road to PhD less rocky
Article Abstract:
An overview of the PhD system in the United Kingdom, detailing good and bad points, giving examples of the difficulties that some students face as a result of poor supervision, and examining criticisms of the system that are expected to come from a report produced by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the other national funding bodies. It is expected that the report will criticise the narrowness of postgraduate courses that focus only on the completion of the research project with no provision for the development of skills such as teaching, however, it is not expected that the report will suggest a shift towards the US model of the taught PhD.

Seeds of the 'new Holocaust'?
Article Abstract:
Baruch Kimmerling, a sociologist with the Hebrew University, has been accused by his enemies of betraying his Jewishness and supporting the massacre of Israelis for some of the arguments that he has put forward. In his latest book, "Politicide - Ariel Sharon's War against the Palestinians", he launches a polemic against the policies of Ariel Sharon, arguing that they could bring disaster to Israel, destroying the moral foundation of the Jewish state and eventually reducing Israel to nothing more than a footnote in the history books.
