Is America shorting its students?
Article Abstract:
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hedrick Smith argues that the US is less mindful of long-term returns on human resource investment than Germany and Japan. The US does not provide proper education to students who are not directed towards a college education during high school. In his book, 'Rethinking America,' Smith reveals that business and educational approaches in the US, Germany, and Japan are based on the societal structure of the country. He also looks into the labour-management relations and the social politics of these countries to examine the challenges faced by them.

Two students, two countries: two vastly different outcomes
Article Abstract:
The experiences of two students, from the US and Germany, reveal how the educational and corporate practices of the US are unable to produce high-skilled workers. The Vo-Tech program in the US provides three hours a day to learn a craft using outdated equipment. On the other hand, German students spend 3 1/2 days a week in training, and 1 1/2 days in class. Germany's dual-education system does not guarantee a job at the end of the apprenticeship, but encourages students to get employed on the basis of their abilities.

Work force education reform
Article Abstract:
Five important 'workforce education' reform recommendations were formulated since the William T. Grant Foundation report 'The Forgotten Half' was made public. These are 'America's Choice: High Skills or Low Wages' in 1990 and 'Connecting School and Employment', 'America 2000-Excellence in Education', 'National Education Goals' and 'Job Training 2000' in 1991. They reflect reports that emphasize teaching students work skills as well as academic ability.
