Life: a course in survival
Article Abstract:
A Professor of Community Care in Anglia University, UK, describes how he, as a child, was physically abused by his father. He also experienced seeing his mother beaten by her husband. He finds that he still suffers from bouts of depression and overwhelming anger. He points out that the mentally ill are very poorly served by the community but he is pleased that his university admits some students with mental health problems. After studying at Hull University, the narrator became a psychiatric social worker and author. During 1982 he became a Buddhist monk. He is also a father of two boys.

The value of sitting
Article Abstract:
Professor of politics at the University of Essex Anthony King reflects on the contribution he may have made as the academic member of the Nolan Committee on Standards in Public Life. King suggests that, as an academic political scientist, he had a sense of the relevant history of sleaze which his fellow committee members lacked. His knowledge of political corruption in other countries and personal intellectual disposition towards generalisation and theory-building may also have been of benefit.
