MSPs warm to free research
Article Abstract:
The political intern scheme run by Edinburgh University at the Scottish Parliament has proved to be a success, with MSPs being attracted by the fact that, in effect, they are getting free researchers. Tavish Scott, Liberal Democrat MSP for Shetland, notes that the intern scheme provides MSPs with more staff in their parliamentary offices who bring new, imaginative thinking to the policy dilemmas faced by MSPs.

Gender equality stalls north of border

The number of female staff in Scottish higher education has risen in recent years but at professorial level the number has stalled, according to the Gender in Scottish Higher Education: What's the issue? report by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC). The report found that less than 5 percent of female staff are professors, vs 16 percent of male staff.

Brave Scots win minds
Article Abstract:
Scotland has proven to be more successful than England in encouraging people from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter higher education while avoiding controversial policies such as top-up fees and the 50% target. The ways in which the Scottish approach differs from that of England is examined with specific examples being highlighted.
