Making the grade: assessment provides focus for vocational programs
Article Abstract:
The necessity of assessing the effectiveness of postsecondary vocational programs and services was discussed. The Johnson County Community College was presented as an example of a vocational school which tries to determine the effectiveness of its programs. Most of the school's programs have, or are developing, exit competencies, whichare descriptions in behavioral terms of the skills that graduates are expected to possess. Program and course objectives are specified to students so that they know what to aim for. Follow-up surveys of graduates and surveys of employers allow the school to evaluate the effectivity of its programs.

Creating the new American school
Article Abstract:
US Pres Bush announced his America 2000 education plan last Apr 1992. The plan called for the participation of American business in the building of 535 'New American Schools.' In response to this, the business sector launched its New American Schools Development Corp (NASDC), an independent nonprofit agency that will finance the design of these new learninginstitutions. The design teams that will be granted NASDC contracts will be asked to redefine education by examining school organization, administration and governance and evaluating teacher training and development.

Strengthening the ties that bind: industry-education councils benefit vocational programs and business
Article Abstract:
Industry-education Councils (IEC) were created to replace disorganized and informal business-education partnerships. IECs are wide-based organizations consisting of major local industries, education leaders and support staff. Its aim is advance school improvement and career preparation by assisting educatorsdevelop curriculum and instructional materials and avail of equipment. In addition, IECs also encourage more students to enter vocational education programs through its career education programs.
