Research Assessment Exercise
Article Abstract:
Edinburgh University's informatics planning unit was bitterly disappointed not to be awarded a 5-star rating in the 1996 research assessment exercise (RAE), having scored a 5 in the 1992 exercise. Manchester Business School improved on its 1992 rating of 3 by scoring 4 in the 1996 RAE. The decision of the English department of De Montfort University in Leicester, England, to pool resources with the rest of the humanities school helped it gain a 3b rating in the 1996 RAE, a considerable improvement on its 1992 rating of 1. The Central School of Speech and Drama also improved on its 1992 ratings.

Selection perfection
Article Abstract:
Many detailed objections have already been raised by university departments in the UK to the Research Assessment Exercise. These include the negative impact on teaching and strong pressure to publish. It is also possible to oppose the Research Assessment Exercise from a wider viewpoint, casting doubt on the validity of selective research funding itself. It is not possible to support the selective distribution of resources on the ground of efficiency or of equity.
