Metrics deliver a costly blow to the elite

Changes to the current funding regime could result in depleted finances for some top universities. The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has unveiled five possible metrics-based funding models to replace the RAE but under the reforms, three of the so-called Golden Diamond of top research universities, Cambridge University, Manchester University and UCL, will lose substantial amounts.

Report moots fees in Sweden

Leading Swedish academics want changes to the way universities are funded, including the right to charge tuition fees. Universities and colleges of higher education in Sweden are prohibited by law from charging tuition fees but the Ministry of Education, Research and Culture is exploring possibly charging non-EU students tuition fees.
