Hopes fade for EU cash boost
Article Abstract:
Universities in the United Kingdom have seen their hopes for a twofold increase in the amount of funding available from the European Union (EU) for research be apparently quashed as a result of the failure of European Union leaders to come to an agreement over a budget for 2007-2013. The Seventh Framework Programme on research was intended to head the EU's Lisbon Process, funded by planned investment of Euro 67.8 bil, but there is now doubt over when and how much money will be approved for the process.

After the deluge, the real troubles begin
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the work done by the University of Middlesex Flood Hazard Research Centre into the impact that floods have on people. Researchers at the centre, which is the only specialist flood research centre to look into the social and economic policy dimensions of flooding, fear that their work will be lost if the government's plans to concentrate research funding in the United Kingdom move forward.
