Mix in with mandarins
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the apparently inconsequential role academics in the UK play in the making of public policy when compared with their colleagues in the US and Europe. It is contended that it is the higher education system, with its reliance on things such as the research assessment exercise and its valuing of being published in journals above involvement in public policy, that it is to blame for this lack of involvement by academics, and that the system as a whole will need to be reformed before anything will change.
