Article Abstract:

Policies and provisions are being introduced in UK institutions of further education for people with disabilities or learning difficulties who wish to study. The College of North East London, by the end of the 1997/98 academic year, will have a specially designed module or course in every department. Cornwall College, Redruth collaborates with outside bodies in provision through its foundation studies centre. The Tomlinson Committee reported back to the Further Education Funding Council suggesting 50 areas for improvement for disabled students and the setting up of a national staff development programme.

Article Abstract:

Professor of economics at the London School of Economics Charlie Bean, head of the independent academic advisory panel at the Treasury, feels that the present government is more open to academic thought than the Conservatives were. He regards eventual British membership of European monetary union (Emu) as inevitable but personally feels that the costs and benefits of Emu are small. Bean explains that the length of time people remain eligible for benefits is more important for unemployment figures than Emu membership. He argues that the ideal time for labour market reform is when unemployment is falling.

London School of Economics, England, Professor of Politics John Gray has been criticised for his changing political philosophy. In the early 1980s he supported the Conservative government and its plans for a free market. But he gradually changed his views and by the late 1990s he voiced his support for the Labour government led by Prime Minister Tony Blair. In his later books Gray pointed out how the global free markets where unstable. He also has an interest in the environment. Gray will be working on identifying possible areas of difficulty in the future and advising the politicians.
