French trapped by their centralism
Article Abstract:
French universities are obliged to offer equal opportunities to all students in France's centralised educational system, but this system is making the further education financial crisis worse. All applicants for a course must be taken on, even though the course may be over-subscribed. Inevitably, course competition on popular courses is fierce and failure rates are high, although students feel that this situation is preferable to one where selection criteria are used. Frequent student protests are occurring over cuts to university funding and teaching facilities.

Grim warning on student funding
Article Abstract:
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has warned that spending levels per student cannot easily be maintained as student numbers rise. France, Italy, Greece and Spain tend to spend less than average per capita on university students while the US spends more. The UK performs well in terms of graduate employment and proportions of science graduates in the work force, though less well in terms of graduates in computer science andmathematics.
