Article Abstract:
An analysis of the grading systems employed by universities in the United States, the importance that maintaining certain grade levels can have for a student and the debate about how many students achieve the top grades. It is argued that no matter what discussion takes place about how grades are awarded, academics need to believe in the absoluteness of the A grade, which signifies not that a student is merely at the top of a distribution of better and worse performance, but that signifies the excellence for which academics live and teach.

An analysis of the sporting scandals that are tainting a number of universities and colleges in the United States. It is argued that the term "scholar athletes" for college athletes is a sham, as a large number of college athletes never actually graduate, and that at as a result of the importance of the sporting teams to a college, members of the teams are allowed to get away with activities that are morally indefensible.
