Navigating the moral maze
Article Abstract:
South African President Nelson Mandala held a Morals Summit to discuss how all the people must become more involved in maintaining the bill of rights. Ethics has a role to play in all areas of life. The Club of Rome called for a new set of ethics to be established in its 1991 report. Universities have an important role in developing the new ethics yet they have difficulty in managing the wide varieties of cultures, religions and beliefs of the people who work or study within their system. It has been suggested they fear discussions on ethics because of what they may reveal.

The Forum for African Women in Education needs support to help it in its work of increasing access to education, for girls in Africa. Foreign educationalists can help by forming relationships with the providers of education in Africa and to encourage them to educate girls. The Forum also has some funding in the form of scholarships for the cleverest girls. At a Forum meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, during Aug 1999, several girls spoke very movingly of their experiences and the hardships they faced growing up in Africa.
