Entering the dragon
Article Abstract:
The Chinese government have changed the rules regarding the administration of universities and have allowed the provinces more autonomy. As a result it is likely foreign academics will be able to play a more important role in academia in China. The British have not been as active in China as academics from Australia and the US. Some 6,000 Chinese students were studying in the UK during 1999, a rise of 4,000 students since 1996. Many pay for their own university education. It is predicted the Chinese market for British goods and services will reach 20 billion pounds sterling by 2002.
