New start in the Second Chance saloon
Article Abstract:
The Edinburgh University Settlement has many projects under its social welfare umbrella, one of which is the Second Chance to Learn. It is aimed at adults who were unable to continue in education and operates from schools and education centres in the socially deprived suburbs of Pilton, Wester Hailes and Craigmillar. Unemployment is 15% in Pilton, and 44% in Wester Hailes. In 1990-91 13% of students went on to access courses, 37% to further education colleges and 27% into other types of education.
