No codding for Chance Cove
Article Abstract:
A ban on fishing affecting Chance Cove, Newfoundland, Canada, has lasted five years though it was originally to last two years. The ban was imposed due to a drop in fish stocks, which some analysts see as having begun in the 1950s with the introduction of large trawler vessels. Local economies have been hard hit by the ban and schools have been closed. Tourism helps offset the impact of the ban but is not enough on its own due to the number of jobs lost in the fishing industry.
