No place at the table; the growing isolation of the humanities
Article Abstract:
The UK government has declined to set up a humanities research council. Some of this work is done by the British Academy, which has 21.7 million pounds sterling to give towards research. Scientific research receives 50 times as much government support. Observers feel that as the humanities cannot earn money by producing technological innovation they should receive more in government support.

Europe adopts new scheme for researchers
Article Abstract:
The European Commission and member states have accepted an interim scheme for payment for research fellowships. The awards will be linked to national pay levels. There will also be a mobility allowance and flat-rate for travel costs. Host institutions will be paid 10,000 Ecu annually to help meet research costs. The scheme forms part of the Fourth Framework Programme.
